| "Painting is a means of feeling 'living.' ...Painting is the only art form except still photography which is without time. Music takes time to listen to and ends, writing takes time and ends, movies end, ideas and even sculture take time. Painting does not. It never ends, it is the only thing that is both continuous and still. It's a still place. It's like one word, one image..." Joan Mitchell (1986) THE CONTEMPORARY ART OF URSULA J. MATHERS Originally from San Francisco, Ursula Mathers graduated from Bennington College in the state of Vermont. And it is precisely from the rich colours of nature found in New England and the soft forms of the Tuscan landscape where she lives today, that Ursula finds inspiration for her new artistic pieces. Her art is predominantly abstract, reconciling natural elements with suggested interior spaces. The result of which are original paintings, sophisticated yet essential, with light backgrounds of surreal skies literally dug out of the canvas, creating natural forms: trunks, branches, leaves, blossoms and fruit. All of which are almost similar in proportions to the objects themselves and, at times, even of the same colour, though they are surreal in their assembly of elements, suspended without references, with only a hint of gravity and luminosity. Immobile yet forever animated. Lifeless, yet alive. They appear white, but have the colours of an inner world, conveying a sense of peace and serenity.
